Call-outs

Mountain Rescue teams are usually called out  with the authority of the police. The local police usually initiate a call-out in response to a 999 call or report of a missing person.

The team responds to call-outs at any time of day or night, under any conditions, every day of the year. The police control alerts the BMRT coordinators via SARCALL (a search and rescue incident management platform used across the UK). The co-ordinator alerts the team with an “I will respond – (name)” message to all team members, the signal for the rescue to start.

The coordinator discusses the details of the incident with the police and decides where to rendezvous and what other resources, such as other teams, dogs or helicopters, should be called. An initial search plan is developed as the team moves to the meeting point.

How we know where to look

We form the search plan using a combination of looking for clues, such as a route card or an abandoned car, researching how and where different types of people are typically found and drawing on our years of experience.
