About Us

Brecon Mountain Rescue

Brecon Mountain Rescue Team (BMRT) is an emergency service staffed entirely by volunteers and funded solely by donations

Based in Brecon, we cover an area of around 700 square miles, stretching from the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park in the south to Newtown in the northeast and Aberystwyth in the northwest.

We also often help other mountain rescue teams across South and West Wales, working together to keep people safe in some of the UK’s most challenging terrain.

We operate in all weather conditions, on all terrains, 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

Our work goes far beyond rescuing climbers and hillwalkers. The police often call on us to search for vulnerable or missing persons, help farmers who have accidents in remote areas and help horse riders, cyclists, kayakers and others in difficulty. We’re also called out to road traffic incidents in places that traditional emergency services may struggle to reach.

As well as providing specialist search and rescue services, we also have emergency medical expertise.

Beyond our rescue work, we take part in community education, outreach and fundraising activities.

All of our active hill members are trained and experienced in navigation, steep-ground work, search techniques, technical rope work, field communications and first aid.

Many also hold nationally accredited qualifications in skilled roles, including:

• Casualty Carer

• Off-Road and Blue-Light Driver

• Drone Pilot

• Swift Water Rescue Technician

• Search Coordinator

Each of these roles requires specialist training, equipment and, in some cases, dedicated vehicles. Together they make sure we can respond effectively to any emergency, wherever it occurs.

We work closely with our partners in emergency response — including the police, NHS, and fire service — as well as other organisations that help us rescue people quickly and safely.

Collaboration is at the heart of what we do, and we’re always looking for new ways to improve how we help people in need.

What we do

We provide specialist search and rescue capabilities, combined with emergency medical expertise, to find and assist people who may be in danger. We deploy our team all year round, in all weather conditions, on all terrains. We are also active in the communities we serve and with our partners in the Emergency Services and Armed Forces, running outreach and fundraising activities.

Capabilities

All our active hill members are experienced in navigation, steep ground, search techniques, technical rope work, field communications and first aid. Furthermore, team members that achieve nationally-accredited qualifications can operate in specialist roles including: Casualty Carer, Off Road Driver, Blue Light Driver, Drone Pilot, Swift Water Rescue Technician and Search Coordinator. Each role has its own specialist equipment, training and even vehicles.
