Hero vigilante donates £10,000!!

No one would ever expect a former US military police major turned vigilante to have links with a team of volunteer mountain rescuers in Mid Wales.

Yet Jack Reacher, the fictional character who will be played by Tom Cruise in a film out next year, has come to rescue of Brecon Mountain Rescue Team.

The hero of the 16 books by Lee Child, which have sold 40 million copies worldwide, has donated £10,000 to Brecon MRT to their fund raising appeal for a new control vehicle.

The control vehicle is used to coordinate searches for missing people across South and Mid Wales.

Mark Jones from Brecon MRT, said: “We are very grateful to Mr Reacher. He is a character who is known across the globe and has helped us out in our hour of need.”

“So many people from all walks of life have come forward to help in this fundraising campaign. It’s been a mammoth job for us as we don’t just need to raise this money, but also continue fundraising for our team’s operational costs as we are totally dependent on donations.

“We’ve still got £20,000 to go to reach our target so we would appeal to anyone who has been helped in the past by our members, or regularly walks in the mountains around Brecon and Mid Wales, to think of us – every penny helps.”

Author Lee Child has family links with Brecon.

About Brecon MRT!

This is a slide-slow our Deputy Team Leader, David Coombs, prepared in 2010. It gives a flavour of what we do. That said, the camera is rarely out in the heat of an incident, and not at all at night or in the wet!

Talybont Trial this weekend

The Talybont Trail is one of two long distance walks organised by Newport Outdoor Group and Brecon MRT. The other event held in April is the Black Mountains Roundabout, a distance of 26 miles which starts and finishes in Crickhowell.

The 2011 Talybont Trial takes place on 8th October from Henderson Hall, Talybont-on-Usk and is over a distance of 20 miles. A new shorter route covering 10 miles was introduced several years ago to make it more suitable for people who may not be able to take on the full distance. Each year the route of the event alternates between clockwise/anti clockwise direction. For this year it runs clockwise, with check points at: Tor y Foel, Chartist Cave, Trefill Trig point, Pant y Craigiau, (Refreshments at Torpantau), Craig Pwllfa, finishing at Henderson Hall.

The event starts promptly at 8.00am and its expected to field approximately 300 participants. Brecon MRT plays a critical role in providing safety cover, manning check points and having a mobile team on hand to respond to any emergencies. Late entries can be taken on the morning, but all participants should note that personal kit carried by each individual should include; map, compass, torch, whistle, water proofs, warm clothing, first aid kit, water/food.

Control Vehicle Destroyed

"Zebra Romeo" after RTC

This is all that remains of the communications vehicle that was vital in coordinating rescues across South and Mid Wales.

The specialist mobile command vehicle for the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team was involved in a three-vehicle collision last weekend during a call out near Builth Wells.

Incredibly the two team members in the vehicle escaped with minor injuries. Other team members treated casualties on the scene until ambulances arrived.

Nigel Dawson, team leader of Brecon MRT, said: “What is most important is that our two team members escaped serious injury. We attend around 100 call outs every year and this vehicle was also central to many other rescues across South and Mid Wales.

“Our fundraising team, who already raise all the money for our day to day operating costs, are about to launch a campaign for a new mobile HQ.

“Until then we have been generously loaned a communications vehicle so that we can continue providing the cover that the public has come to expect.”
