Brecon Mountain Rescue Team

This year's calls have been recorded in accordance with MRC requirements, logging each incident where MR resources have been used, even if only to talk to disoriented groups on mobile phones to get them back onto the right track (a method of sorting a problem far superior to dragging our members away from wives, husbands, lovers or even bosses!). Minor incidents, such as calls where we provide only advice, or where we assist members of the public that we happen to come across are not recorded.

The number of team members involved from each team from South Wales is recorded along with the time, the following abbreviations are used;

4	26 - 27 January	Chepstow	22.05 Call to assist Longtown MRT with a search for a missing despondent male from Chepstow who had left home after a family dispute. 6 teams searched all night, misper turned up in Wakefield having caught the train there the morning of the call-out.	8.5hrs Brecon 22, CB 11, LMRT 7, WB 13, SARA 14, SARDA 1
5	5 February	Llanelli	Called at 22:00hrs to search for missing 47yr old male. Found safe near river
6	20 February	Cenarth	Called at 18:30hrs to search for a missing 43yr old farmer. Found at 22:15 by SARDA dog on a promontory above his farm
7	21 February	Grwyne Fawr	Called at 15:00hrs to locate and evacuate two males on Pen y Gadair, one suffering from unspecified medical problems & caught in a blizzard. The men had managed to make it into the forestry and were located by teams shortly after their arrival. Evacuated to Nevill Hall Hospital by Land Rover with a suspected allergic reaction.
8	23 February	Garnant, Ammanford	Called at 07:30hrs to search for a 72yr old despondent female who'd gone missing from home the night before. Found close to home, but had succumed to the cold and died before being located.
9	23 February	Pont ar Daf	Search for couple lost in the Pen y Fan area. No equipment except a mobile phone and caught in a snow storm. Located by SARDA after the missing persons used a camera flash to show their location, during breaks in the weather. Located and taken down the Neaudd valley	Brecon 17, CB14, SARDA 3
10	4 March	Storey Arms	Called at 03:30hrs. freezing weather conditions ( -8ºC ) snow & ice. Search for missing male who had run from a car onto the hill during a police stop check. Dressed only in a t-shirt & jeans and under the influence of drugs and alcohol the missing. Concerns for well being of misper. Located by police while team en route.	Brecon 20
11	5 March	Storey Arms	While on Sunday exercisethe team was called to attend to a 12 yr old child who sustained a knee injury whilst he was sledging.	Brecon 26
12	5 March	Storey Arms	Shortly after incident 11 team members were called to treat a 6yr old girl who sustained facial trauma after hitting a fence while sledging.	Brecon 26
13	5 March	Storey Arms	While dealing with incident 12 team members were called to attend a 20yr old male who had suffered a lower leg injury whilst sledging. Splinted & evacuated to PCH by ambulance	Brecon 26
14	5 March	Storey Arms	While dealing with incident 13 the team was called to a nearby child who had also been sledging in the area and had crashed into a rock. Evacuated with suspected spinal injuries to PCH by ambulance.	Brecon 26
15	19 March	Aberystwyth	Team called at 18:30 to search for a missing boy who turned up safe while the team was assembling.	Brecon 7

17	15 April	Dinas Rock	Team called 15.46. Male fallen in Dinas Rock Gorge. Injured right leg	Duration 2 hrs. Brecon 9. W/Beacons 10
18	19 April	Foel Fawr	Area call 14.50. Walker with neck and leg injuries	Duration 2hrs 30 mins. Brecon 10
19	22 April	Cwm Llwch	Area call 17.00. Weather: clear, dry. Male walker with fracture to right ankle, evac by Land Rover to hospital	Duration 1 hr Brecon 8 C/Beacons 5
20	13 May	Dinas Rock	Area call 13.51. Weather: showers, cool, wet underfoot. Female walker with broken leg.	Duration 1 hrs 50 mins. Brecon 7. W /Beacons 6 C/Beacons 14
21	13 June	Clyn Gwyn, Ystradfellte	54yr old male fell approx 50ft from footpath to bottom of waterfall. Sustained head, limb & suspected spinal injuries. Assisted by passers by. Evacuated by MR & St Mawgan flight	Duration:1hr 30mins. Brecon 11 CBMRT 10 WBSART 8

25	13 July	Tafarn y Garreg	Team called at 15.55. Weather; dry, hot. D of E group 'lost somewhere in the Brecon Beacons!' Located by police helicopter. Team stood down en-route.	Brecon 8
26	18 July	Cwmbran	Area Call. Weather; warm, good vis, dry under foot. Walker slipped suspected fracture to right ankle.	Duration 2h 30mins. Brecon 5 CBMRT 13. WBSART 8. Longtown

28	22 July	Tumble / Cross Hands	Called at 1300hrs to search for a 46yr old despondent female missing from home. Found in a very poorly condition by a SARDA dog handler at 1900hrs.	Duration:9hrs Brecon 11, CBMRT 13, WBSART 8
29	30 July	Llanstefan	Called at 7.20 to search for 18 yr old m with poss head injury following RTA. Found at caravan home at 1100 hrs
30	30 July	Glynneath	Area call at 1730 to a child fallen over a waterfall. Evac by ambulance while team assembling
31	10 Aug	Ystradfellte Scwd-y-Pannwr	9 year old girl fell 30ft from footpath & landed on head & back. Treated for suspected spinal injuries (later confirmed) & concussion. Evacuated to air ambulance & taken to Morriston Hospital	Brecon 8 CBMRT 8 WMSART 6
32	13 Aug	Devil's Staircase, Abergwesyn	Search for 5 men from the West Midlands who had become lost north of Drigan Fawr, become benighted & were not equipped with a torch & appropriate clothing. Found trying to keep warm & evacuated by hill party.	Brecon 15 8hrs

36	19 Aug	Ystradfellte	2 people complaining of medical problems lost in forest around the waterfalls area, one complianing of chest pains. Located & treated by mountain rescue teams & evacuated by Rescue 169 Chivenor to hospital.	Brecon 6 CBMRT 12 2.5hrs
37	19-20 Aug	Devil's Bridge	6 gorgewalkers trapped in riverbed between cliff & river, cut off from escape by rising flood water. Only escape route was over 80m cliff above their refuge. Casualties moved to 20m above river and winched from site by RAF Valley 122.	Brecon 9 8hrs
38	30 Aug	Cwmgors Brynamman	Search for missing 81 year old local man who had not returned home from a short walk to pick blackberries. Weather had turned stormy. Found near to PLS by members of WBSART	Brecon 21 WBSART 10
39	3 Sept	Gap Road Brecon Beacons	Mountain biker injured during 100km charity event. Fell onto the end of his handlebars, injuring his ribs. Experienced severe pain and breathing difficulties. Suspected broken ribs, query pneumothorax & c-spine injury. Treated on hill & evacuated to Prince Charles Hospital by rescue 169	Brecon 17
40	3 Sept	Fan Nedd Heol Senni	2 missing walkers became disorientated in cloudy conditions. turned up safe as teams arrived at roadhead.	Brecon 19 CBMRT 10
41	11 Sept	Neath	08:00 Call to search for a 51 yr old despondent male who had gone missing from home. Found dead in search area by ground team. Body evacuated by helicopter due to difficult terrain.	Brecon 15 WBSART 11
42	14 Sept	Blorenge	14:00 Call to assist ambulance service in eveacuating a walker with fractured left ankle.	Brecon 9
43	1 Oct	Dan yr Ogof	22:00 Search for missing 58 year old male who had been walking in the Sinc y Geidd area earlier in the week & lost his dog. The missing man & his wife then returned on the weekend to search further after reported sightings. Male became lost in the mist and spent the night sheltering in a sink hole. Turned up the following morning wet & cold but safe despite 6 hours of searching in very poor visibility.	Brecon 15 WBSART 10
44	9 Oct	Pen y Fan	15:45 Call to assist the ambulance service with a 28 yr old male experiencing chest pains 100m from summit of Pen y Fan. Evacuated safely to hospital by air ambulance.	Brecon 8
45	15 Oct	Pen Twyn Mawr, Grwyne Fawr	16:38 Call to assist in the evacuation of a woman in her mid 50's who had collapsed on the summit of Pen Twym Mawr. Evacuated by police helcopter. Team stood down en route.	Brecon 11
46	16 Oct	Artist's V alley, Furance	15th Oct at 5pm a woman set of on scramble bike into forestry near her home. The lights on her bike failed & she was benighted. 47	19 Oct	Grwyne Fawr	06:42hrs Call to assist the MoD in the evacuation of a hypothermic & unconscious soldier. Successfully evacuated by MoD. Teams stood down while being called out.	Brecon 5
48	27 Oct	Cefn Crew, nr Pen y Fan	23:16hrs Call to search for 3 males lost, exhausted & hypothermic after having walked for 14 hrs and covered 60km. 49	29 Oct	Llangatock Escarpment	Call from ambulance service to assist with climber who had fallen while back climbing a route. His gear had come out but there was no equipment failure. 50	31 Oct	Crug Mawr, Black Mountains	Search for 2 male mountain bikers who had become disorientated. An ongoing medical condition put one of the males at risk due to the cold weather. Located as they were making their way off the hill.	Brecon 21 Longtown 10
51	1 Nov	Bwlch Cerrig Duon, nr. Trecastle	Search for missing 13yr old boy who had run away from carer during multiday adventure training. Found in Abercraf as teams were about to be tasked onto the hill.	Brecon 13 CBMRT 6 WBSART 8

53	16 Nov	Corn Du	Search for missing 44yr old despondent female. Located on path between Corn Du & Pont ar Daf. The casualty was being assisted by a leadership group from RAF Lyneham & was treated by team members and paramedics on scene before being evecuated to hospital by Rescue 169.
